It read 18 degrees on my car's thermometer at the trail head. The trail was snow over dirt, snow over ice, and then windblown snow. For about 95% of the trail there was only and inch or two of snow. After the last turn toward the peak there was a new layer of windblown snow covering the trail. I didn't like the look of the slope where the trail traverses the east side of the peak, so I switched from spikes to snowshoes, cut up through the trees, and followed the ridge to the peak. It was much colder and windier up top. I missed the epic views this day due to the cloud cover on the upper section. I guess I will need to hike it again on a clear day.
