On Saturday 5/25 with the support of my fellow Bay Area Hikers I took my 9th and final peak of the Bay Area 6 Peak Challenge. Yes 9 of 6, there are 9 peaks to choose from to complete the challenge and since I am an over achiever I hiked all 9! Â
Mt. Sizer is a tough hike to say the least. We covered 15.25 miles, gained 4534 in elevation, in about 6 hours. Â
The day started off overcast and drizzly. But the trails were not muddy, and the breeze was light. Â
We started off at about 8:10 AM took the Monument Trail and connected with the Ponderosa trail to make our first stop at the Henry Coe Monument. It is just a monument not his grave. The group posed for a quick picture, and we were back at it. Â
After a brief break and peeling off a few layers because we were getting warm, we hit Hobbs Rd to Frog Lake.Â
The lake was still, and the frogs were hiding because it was still cool and overcast. Â
After a group photo we started out again taking the Middle Ridge trail to reconnect with Hobbs Rd to Middle Fork Coyote Creek. This was a tricky water crossing and a few hikers for their feet wet. Â
We took a break at the creek and prepared for the hardest 1.4-mile climb up Hobbs Rd to Blue Ridge Rd. This took a lot of grinding up this road. It is VERY steep and rocky with little to no breaks. On average you are hiking a 25% grade the majority of the time. Â
Once we hit Blue Ridge the sun was starting to come out and it was just a quick 1.1 miles to the summit. Â
We hit the summit just before 11am. There was a light breeze, and the sun was out. Another group from the Bay Area Hikers were also there and joined us for lunch and a group photo! They were also completing the Bay Area Peak Challenge. Â Â Â Â Â
The summit of Mt. Sizer is just a hill with trees. It is anticlimactic but it has some nice, limited views. It is more of the sense of accomplishment and the experience to reach the summit in my opinion. Â Â Â
We got back on the trail about 1130ish after a good break and lunch. On our way back we encountered a little gofer snake just off the trail. Â
We took Blue Ridge Rd and made a right on Jackass Trail to cut over to Poverty Flats Rd. Â
Jackass was a bit overgrown, but we encountered some nice flowers and butterflies. Â Â
We took a break at Poverty Flats campground and then made our final push back to the parking lot. Â
It was a fantastic day to hike Mt. Sizer!
