With the extra long weekend I knew I had to try to conquer San Antonio/Baldy! I started around 6:30am with many other hikers. I decided to do the out and back on to fire road to the ski lodge and Devil’s backbone to give my wonky knee and toes a break. Most hikers turned at the baldy bowl trail to do the loop so I had the road to myself for the most part to the lodge. Venturing towards devil’s backbone I caught up with several groups. I will admit the first part of the backbone was a bit scary for me, my vertigo kicked in. The final mile and a half were great and I felt very motivated to summit. I think that summiting Cucamonga the previous weekend helped with the elevation. It was quite hot (as expected) and the exposure was intense on this trail so I do caution others to start early, have sun protection and plenty of water.
