It was a rather blustery day on Volcan Mountain. I had heard that it could be quite windy on this hike, but they weren't joking. Last time I hiked this trail it was a calm day, so it was nice to experience all of the wind that I have heard about. We hiked along the Five Oaks Trail both on the way out and on the way back; this is my favorite section of the hike. In addition to all of the oaks, the manzanitas along this trail are stunning, and they were blooming. We stopped at the two lookouts with signs indicating peaks in the distance; this is a very nice addition to the trail. There is a beautiful bench with hand carvings just before the peak where we enjoyed our lunch and took a few pictures; there is also a nice stand of oaks near the bench which is a great place to get a bit of shade. It was a perfect day on the trail…cool with a few clouds. We saw one deer during our hike; that is always a treat.
