Attempting to bag all (6) peaks in five days. Flew in from San Diego and checked with Jeff and Ethan on alternate hikes for (3) of the hikes that are still inaccessible. So grateful for the speedy response!
Beautiful drive up to the trailhead. Pit toilet in parking lot. Trail starts steady climb right away. Water run off makes for a slippery accent and descent in some areas but nothing crazy. There are still patches of snow that poles and treaded shoes help with as low as a mile in. When you get to the ridge the wildflowers greet you in abundance. Clear day provides a picturesque backdrop off the. Mountains. Rolling hills continue to impress, after h the junction you’ll still have another 2.3 miles to the peak and although moderate climbing in most areas there was one rather steep straight up that we had to cheerlead each other through. Passed a number of hikers coming down the trail that confirmed Lewis was accessible without spikes, so that was reassuring given we were going off a recent review here that stated mostly dry. It went from patches of snow to stretches of snow/fields of snow pretty close to the top (followed same reviewers map/almost exactly) and my hiking buddies were calling bs the duration of the climb in the snow, until we intersected with dry trail again. Summit with sign – done , and back down quickly as we felt a drop of rain and and thunder billowed in the distance. Brief moment of panic when hail started but passed quickly. Hike down was uneventful we by passed some of the hill climbs that we could, but that translates to more snow fields, down hill on the steep incline, despite rain was easy. Meadow was still as impressive going out as it was coming in. Saw to dirt bikes, heard them before we saw them, they were respectful and slowed and pointed out their line so we knew where to step off trail safely. Coming down the last 1.5 miles was more technical then the way up because of the slickness, but nothing crazy.. gorgeous hike would highly recommend. I wore trail runners and used trekking poles (bring the snow baskets) and was good to go. Would definitely recommend to pack rain gear for potential afternoon thunderstorms and show gaiters might be helpful if your worried about plunging foot into soft/deep snow..
