First of all, we camped the night prior in Idyllwild Campground so that we would be closer. We knew that it was going to be a long hike as well as difficult so we wanted to be close to get an early start.
Unfortunately got a late start to the day at about 10am. Lol.
With over packed packs we started up the mountain. After about 2000 feet of elevation gain, there was snow covering the entire path. Halfway up at Little Round Valley campground, it decided to start sprinkling some snow. At this point we decided to keep going up the mountain, though we considered turning back.
Hiking poles and microspikes made the trek up the rest of the mountain much easier, though this was the hardest hike I have ever done.
Hiked past Owl's Hootch and then past the outhouse which was not usable. Then straight up the mountain. The fog and snow was rolling in at this point as well. About 200 ft. from the summit, the fog and snow cleared and blue skies greeted us at the summit. It was the most incredible views with beautiful glistening snow at the top. Easily could see Gorgonio and Joshua Tree from the top. The storm that had just passed us was in the distance towards Hemet at this point. We only spent about 20 minutes at the top, because it was 3:30pm and we knew we had a long ways down through many feet of snow.
We walked/slid down the mountain only to encounter some friendly hail on the way down. The Gamma mx hoody performed well in these conditions. We were getting tired at this point, but saw beautiful sunset views on the way down. It was getting dark about 30 minutes before the end of the hike and got back to the car at about 8pm.
Toughest, yet coolest hike we have done. We will definitely do it again when it is warmer.
