Hot and sunny day, could see smoke in the distance but we appreciated clear air (beyond all the dust kicked up!!!!). I was expecting this hike to be tough for me as it was my first 5000 foot gain, but I underestimated how exhausting the neverending ash and volcanic rock would be, slip sliding along (poles definitely helped). And again, harder to catch my breath at 9-10,000 feet as I’m used to sea level!!!! But in the end, we survived and the views were well worth it. Also, LOVED the suggestion of dipping into river at the bottom- we soaked our legs for as long as we could stand the cold!!!!
