Beautiful, rewarding, and also brutal. I can see why this is considered by many to be the hardest hike in San Diego. It has almost no switchbacks, so many of the ascents are very steep. There is a variety of elevation change and terrain, including many rocky sections. The last half mile is a lot of steep scrambling that is hard to follow. Once you’re at the top, the views are amazing. We could see all the way to the ocean from downtown to La Jolla, neighboring mountains to the east and north, and Mexico to the south. We bagged El Capitan too, making the hike slightly longer. Felt accomplished signing the register in the old car glove box. Will probably tackle again someday 🙂
