Ok, so my 9 year old son and I thought we'd give Bear Mountain a go last weekend. Its a pretty easy hike in from the west, but we seriously underestimated the ice that the area got hit with in the previous day. We were dressed for the very cold weather and made it probably 3/4 of the way to the summit, but one of us didn't have traction devices and it got too dangerous. I was game to bail earlier, but the kid seemed like he was enjoying the challenge. Coming down he didn't enjoy so much. Don't try this with snow and ice unless you have some microspikes and are pretty surefooted!
