This is a tough hike. Lots of loose lava rock on trail, tough on the feet & ankles. Once you get to the ascent for the crater it’s sandy & steep. We lucked out that the weather was cool & rainy, this would be a tough hike in hot weather, the lava radiates the heat so much. Once we made the tough trail to the top, the crater was really is impressive! The quickest way down was to follow the line right down the face, basically doing some “pumice skiing”, leaving lots of rocks in our shoes to dump out at the bottom. We did the side hike to Little Belknap on the way back since it was so close.
