Tuesday 9/19 – Day 3 of 6, hike 3 of 6.
This trail is very close to Alan Peak. The trailhead parking lot has a pretty deep rut between the dirt and the road. May want to be careful – there is parking across the street and a lot just passed the trailhead if you have a low clearance vehicle.
Really like this trail and was very glad it was added so that I could get 3 hikes done from my base in Morro Bay. The distance and elevation gain were great as were the views of the Pacific. The big downfall for this hike is the Mountain Bikes. I have hiked in bear and moose country a lot and I have never looking over my shoulder more than I did on this hike. I picked up the bells before moving to the single track that is most of this trail. I am generally not a fan of bells because they take away from the silence that I enjoy while hiking, but these are almost a must. Some of the single track, especially on the way down is deep rutted so if a bike came upon you there are not a lot of options to bail out. The mountain bikers were very nice, but with electric Mountain bikes I almost got run over on the way up a hill. I did this hike on a Tuesday in mid-September, I cannot imagine what it would be like on a weekend.
