From start to a mile and a half before orchard you are pretty much completely exposed to the sun after that there are intermittent shady apots and sections of the trail that are canopied.
I had anticipated taking 30 minute break here to cool off and rest up but the bugs were awful and relentless, definitely bring bug spray or other means of protection mostly compromised of horseflies (which bite).
Bugs start shortly after 1st water and continue all the way up but are the worst at orchard camp.
There were reports of rattlesnakes but I didn't see any. I did however see an adolescent bear right off the trail on my descent just after manzanita ridge. He was grunting so i didn't stick around.
Bring lots of water the unshaded ares are starting get very hot and energy sapping. There were nice cool breezes though.
