Drove down from Portland Friday morning. Stopped at the painted hills and did the short Carroll Rim hike upon arrival to stretch our legs. Camped in the open meadow area at the Sutton Mountain trailhead and stayed two nights.  We didn’t see anyone else camping there, but encountered probably 10 or so other people the whole time we were there. We would have likely seen even fewer people if it weren't Memorial day weekend.  Started the hike at 10:30 on Saturday and reached the summit around 12:15, going at a leisurely pace. You do have to go off trail to reach the actual summit, so take care and try to walk on the rocks as much as possible as to not trample the plants/ wildflowers. Spectacular views and tons of wildflowers. We were searching for the hedgehog cactus to no avail until we started heading back down from the summit. We found them on our left side heading back to the trail a few hundred feet from the summit. Most weren’t in bloom yet but we were lucky to catch a handful that were. The cacti really made the trip for me! Found one tick on our dog after we got back down, so keep that it mind and tuck your pants into your socks! This was a great first major hike to start the season, we thoroughly enjoyed it!
