Parking at start (by hey 80) was limited so drove truck past parking lot on dirt road to start of “hole in the ground trail”.
2 miles off to castle peak which picks up gradient early on. Couldn’t have asked for better weather.
got to base of castle peak, no trail to peak so need some hand and knee work to get to remaining 40 odd feet to get to top (I went half way and decided it wasn’t worth it).
post that headed over to basin peak with a small hike over the ridge. 360* views here with views of devils oven and warren lake. Filled register at Basin peak and decided yo cross country route on way down to Peter Grubb hut. Fall colors are showing up and this hike will be super pretty in a couple of weeks.
spent some time at the hut (managed by Sierra club and you can reserve the place for private use). It’s a 2 story place that can handle 10-15 people easily.
decided to get back in n “hole in the ground trail” and make an ascent of Andesite Peak and then back to truck.
finished the day with Ahi Tuna, draft IPA and garlic fries at burger me in Truckee. ❤️
