Got an earlier start on this on hike with the intention of freeing up our evening. That did not happen lol. Cuyamaca Park does not allow dogs on the trails. Leaving Zoe behind is never an option for us so we decided we would sacrifice the trail and head up the fire road through Paso Picacho campground in order to summit the peak as a family. Though a shorter route, it was still a great climb that gifted us spectacular views of Stonewall Peak and Lake Cuyamaca. We encountered a lot of snow/ice patches on that side of the mountain. That turned into a much slower pace in order to preserve our safety. Had a few close calls with the ice, especially on the way back down. Our favorite part of this trail was hiking among beautiful big trees. We learned a few things from this adventure. One being that snow cleats are a must to carry in winter time. We came to this conclusion after an older couple, possibly in their 60's, breezed on by us through the ice with ease. Two, trekking poles are sooooo worth it. Lastly, no matter how long it takes make sure to ENJOY it, even if ends up taking your whole day.
This hike will be memorable for us as it provided a first for Koa. He graduated to his own hydration pack! With a boost in confidence and self esteem, he's gonna continue kicking ass and taking names.
