In my opinion,  the first 2 miles is the hardest part of the hike.  You're gradually climbing and it's exposed. After that we were in shaded areas that were chilly (mid-December). I did not expect the little scramble to the actual summit; ladder and ropes. But we were successful in getting up there and safely coming down.
