After I was fully vaccinated, I was thrilled to join my hiking friends again. We kicked off my hiking season with the 3 – 2 – 1 (3 peaks in 2 counties in 1 day). Since my carpool was driving up from south Orange County, bagging 3 peaks made the drive worthwhile. It was sunny and cool (high 50's) when we started ~8:45 am. On our way up to Mt Pinos, we passed some patches of snow off to the side of the trail. We got to Mt Pinos by 9:30, and Sawmill by 10:30. We stayed there for a bit to have some snacks. We must have had some yummy snacks because we noticed several flies decided to join our party. Several of us continued on to Grouse Mountain while a few headed home. We arrived at Grouse Mountain by noon. We didn't find a survey marker at this peak — just some rocks and a couple signs with the incorrect elevation on them (8853′ instead of 8583′). We got back to the parking lot by 3 pm where it was in the high 60's. We did not encounter many people on the trail that day. Trails were clear and we saw some flowers, including some California snow plants. All in all, it was a great day for a hike.
