June 20, 2024

Got an early 4:40am start just before dawn – it was still pitch black at that time (headlamp a must for the first hour). I loved hearing the sound of the water rushing down without really being able to see it. Eery feeling. The bugs weren't active in the early morning – not an issue until ~8:30am when they start preparing for battle…

The switchbacks after rounding Bighorn and the Cucamonga Saddle will get you in the zone. I enjoyed the alternating vantage points between the Rancho Cucamonga side and the back of the range.

Summited just in time for a Second Breakfast break before heading back down to the Saddle Junction – on to Ontario Peak next!

PSA: Wilderness & Parking permits
  • Since 2023, the (free / self issued) Cucamonga Wilderness permits can now be obtained via the SGWA website (San Gorgonio Wilderness Association) – same process as Gorgonio & San Bernardino. So much more convenient! (effectively no cell coverage in Baldy – make sure to download your permit before you go)
  • In addition, you'll also need a permit for the Icehouse Canyon TH parking lot (e.g. Forest Adventure pass (day / annual), America the Beautiful NPS). Make sure to secure a permit before heading up to Baldy especially during the week (visitor center only opened on the week-end).
