Elapsed Time: 8 hours
Distance: 13.6 miles (we took an unplanned detour)
Route: Out and Back
Conditions: Trail is in good condition, although unmarked in some key areas so be careful you know where you are going. Trail a bit muddy at the bottom from some run-off (rained yesterday), but only a few tiny patches of snow at highest elevations. Rocky at bottom, then areas of shale which can feel a bit uneasy if you have a fear of heights.) Steeper as you go past second saddle. Near the top, the sign for the turnoff to the top wasn't visible so we went left and had to backtrack. At the top the sign was there (thanks to those who donated it in February) as well as a cache box/log book. What a view! The route down wasn't too bad, steep in areas, but mostly lots of switchbacks.
Temps: Air was cool (not too cold) and warming when we returned.
Animals/Plants of Note: No poison oak at this elevation, very few bugs. Squirrel, chipmunks, a few birds, but not a lot of wildlife out today.
Trail traffic: Minimal (weekday)
Amenities: Camp bathrooms at trailhead parking lot. Restroom bathrooms were open between Ranger Station (not open that early) and trailhead. at Mt. Wilson. No water or food available on hike.
