Another challenging hike, and another one well worth it. This was my last peak of the 2023 Six Pack of Peaks challenge and a worthy one to end with. It is inevitable to compare this to Ontario Peak (I completed it exactly as week before), and I would rate them both equal or perhaps Cucamonga peak just a little more difficult. Of course the majority of the trail is common in reaching both peaks, e.g. Icehouse Canyon Trailhead to the Icehouse saddle. From there, it is either Cucamonga or Ontario (or several others, including Timber mountain, and the other two Ts, Baldy Notch and even Mount Baldy itself, though it is quite a longer way to do it this way). Cucamonga peak from the Saddle is just a bit shorter (6.3 vs 6.6) and a bit higher (8,862 ft vs 8,600 ft). I also consider it more dangerous as the first mile or so after the Saddle is quite narrow with a more steep drop on the side. It levels off a little after a mile, mile and a half, though it will remain fairly steep. The peak itself is much more enjoyable than the Ontario summit. This one is a vast area and possible to roam around a while (as compared to the small, bouldered Ontario Peak). The next time I go this way, I plan to complete Cucamonga first, and then instead of coming all the way back down from the Saddle, go a mile on the Ontario Peak Trail, stay the night at Kelly camps, summit Ontario Peak the next day, and then go back down. The way to the Saddle from the trailhead is rocky and feels like boulder hopping, for at least the first two miles, and the other two miles or so is steep but straightforward path. Okay for me every once in a while, but not one of my favorites. The two Peaks are great and the Saddle is the gateway. Well, that is for 2024.
