We began our hike at Paso Picacho Campground.  This is a great place to start as there is plenty of parking and there are restrooms and a nice picnic area.  It does cost $10/car to park here.  We hiked up to Cuyamaca Peak via Lookout Road.  The paved road was a challenging way to go up for sure…a bit steep and quite exposed most of the way; but, it was a good workout.  We had sunny conditions, but the weather wasn't too warm.  It was a beautiful day at the peak – blue skies and views forever.  We could see out to the Salton Sea today.  It was windy at the peak.  After heading back down the paved road, we turned off onto Conejos Trail.  It was nice to be on an actual trail.  The first section of Conejos Trail was easy, flowing, single track, and under the trees.  The second portion of Conejos Trail was more difficult…quite rocky and a bit steep in areas.  Fun terrain, but you have to stay focused through this section so as not to twist an ankle.  We then got to the bottom of Conejos Trails, we turned onto Azalea Springs Fire Road.  This was an easy, flat section of the hike without too much change in elevation.  We headed back to the campground via Azalea Glen Trail.  This trail is quite beautiful!  It is a gently rolling trail that has the cover of trees and other foliage. There are some Native American Indian grinding rocks along this section of our route.
