I began this hike as I've done several times before, ascending the Fire Road to the summit. Approximately 2.8 miles and 1,600 ft elevation gain, steep in some places but mostly a pleasant enough gradual climb. The radio tower at the top has begun warming up enough to shed the accumulated ice from the night before, falling in large chunks onto the steel girders below, ringing out in loud clanging noises against the otherwise till mid-morning air.
The south side of the peak was still covered in windswept ice and snow, but the remaining view was relatively snow-free.
On the descent I decided to try the Conejos Trail, which starts about half a mile down. This trail added about 2 miles to my hike! It was covered in snow in many places and I was not equipped with microspikes, but it was easily navigable, having been hiked quite a bit by those before me, leaving large bootprints to step in. I enjoyed this much better than hiking back down the fire road, and will try to summit next time along this same trail.
