6 Peaks route of Mt Diablo – going clockwise Mt Olympia, North Peak, Diablo Summit, Eagle Peak, Twin Peaks, Mitchell Rock. Long flat treeless portion to start and I saw a coyote within 15 minutes. I ran about a mile of this part keeping in mind that I would be racing sunset at the end of the day. Recent rains meant the creek was flowing and creating some nice sound. The Donner Cabin ruins provide a cool historical feature on this trail. Came across a man on horseback. Mt Olympia was first up and has some great views to the north, west, and east. From here I could see snow on the Sierras. The climb up to North Peak was pretty tough, especially the last half mile or so which is steep with a lot of loose rock. On over to Diablo Peak where I spent about an hour at the summit, mostly staring out at the Sierras. On the way down there are some really nice stretches of shade and the exposed portions offer nice views of the surrounding canyons and the valley to the west. The portion climbing back up to Eagle Peak was absolutely brutal. On top of Eagle Peak a fellow hiker said they had just seen a rattlesnake jump up into the air to grab a gnat, of which there were many. I wasn't lucky enough to see this, but I did see some rabbits earlier in the day. Twin Peak has a nice rocky surface to climb up on. Mitchell Rock is just a rocky outcrop rather than a peak, but still provides nice views. It was very satisfying getting back down to the bottom and I saw 3 deer having dinner just before the parking lot. All in all it was 15.1 miles and 4,164 feet in 07:27.
