I picked Mt. Diablo for my first peak in the challenge because I know how hot the area and dry the area can be in the spring. I started at Mitchell Canyon to Bald Creek to the ridge. There was a lot of mud. The creek crossings were swollen from the recent rain but still passable. I wish I had my gaiters because I was covered in mud by the time I reached the ridge. The areas in the shadow of the mountain were frozen and slick – I happened to have my micro-spikes in my bag and did use them. Even with poles, there were some frozen, slippery parts that could be dangerous.
I added extra mileage to my ascent because I knew I was going to need a ride back to my car. I wasn't able to leave as early as I wanted and I didn't want to hike back in the dark. I logged 8 miles and 3,900 elevation. Tough solo hike but a great way to start the challenge and the new year.
The peak is great – lots of people and ice cream at the visitor center was an added bonus. I actually plan on going back and doing the waterfall trail.
