Much of the day was overcast with temps in the upper 50’s low 60’s. These are the best conditions for hiking as much of this hike is exposed and I, for one, would NOT want to hike this in the full sun heat. I would also NOT recommend hiking this loop counterclockwise as AllTrails suggests. Clockwise means you go uphill for the steepest and rockiest parts of the hike therefore saving your knees by descending Mitchell creek road which is a fairly consistent garage
I followed the blog for Diablo from Social hiker and it was extremely helpful. I did manage to get off the route, twice, but AllTrails put me back on track right away.
That diabolical part…. By hiking counterclockwise there is a lot of elevation gain in the first three miles including Twin Peaks summit and Eagle Peak summit. I was totally gassed after that and struggled with the rest of the ascent. I am not in great shape but I have done over 2,000 feet elevation gain recently with no issues. This hike tracked on AllTrails at just over 4,000 feet elevation and nearly 14 miles.
Although I struggled with the elevation climb for a solid 3 miles, I made it to the summit. After a rest and lunch, the hike down was much easier. The patience and support of my partner, who is in great shape and had no issues with this hike, is what helped me push through and complete todays hike.
I learned some things, like eat a better breakfast. Hydrate heavily the day before the hike. And you know, go to the gym more!
Don’t let my struggle keep you from this hike. The trails are great. The wild flowers are still everywhere. The views are outstanding and that visitors center built around the summit rock, which you can stand on and touch INSIDE the building is something I have never seen before.
Diabolical? Nah, I got it done! ✅
