As soon as the Sierra Madre entrance (to Angeles Nat’l Forest) opened at 6am, we hurriedly drove up to (and parked at) the Chantry Flats parking area. From there, we descended into the canyon for the iconic Sturtevant Falls. As the crowds began to collect, we took off for the historic Sturtevant Trail to Mount Wilson. This traditional 14-mile (RT), 4,400ft elevation climb up to the summit is not to be taken lightly. The trail itself is deceptively strenuous compared to other peak hikes. After a couple hours (and multiple snack breaks), we finally made our way up to the summit, where we discovered the legendary Mount Wilson Observatory. While the observatory is closed due to ongoing circumstances, we at least got to walk around, have a quick lunch and snap a few pics, as we nearly had the entire premises to ourselves! The Mount Wilson Observatory is well-worth a visit, regardless of whether one decides to hike or drive up to the summit. That said, this was my 5th #SoCal 6-Pack Peak! One more and I will have officially qualified for the Finisher’s List!!
