After hiking Hot Springs mountain in the morning, I figured since I was in the area and Volcan Peak was only a 40 minute drive away, I would bag this one today too, after first stopping at the Julian Pie company in Santa Ysabel for a poor man’s mocha.

This is an easier, shorter hike than Hot Springs, and also fully on an access road. I ascended that way but took the alternate Five Oaks trail back down, which runs roughly parallel to the access road. I highly recommend taking this trail on both ascent and descent. It gives you great views of the valley on that you won’t get from the access road.

Peaks #2 & 3 complete in my quest for the San Diego #SixPackofPeaks Challenge.
