Hiking a Stratovolcano is pretty cool but the norm out here in NM. Hike is pretty straightforward. There are small blue diamonds marking the trail but using AllTrails it was easy to navigate. The markers on this trail are few and far between so downloading the map is ideal. Since it is a volcano the trail has lots of rocks so you need to watch your footing and I recommend hiking poles. Also the trail is a constant vertical rise. For the first 1.5 miles you have tree cover but after that trees are sparse. After tree line it gets steeper and there are very few switchbacks till the end but they are just as steep. Watch out for cows! Bring sunscreen or sun clothing to cover. I started early and finished the trail in 3 hours. Nobody on the trail till heading down. Weekends seem to be busy. There is a false summit so don’t get excited to early lol. As of this post the 5 mile dirt road wasn’t an issue.
