Started our first hike of the Las Vegas Six-Pack bright and early by arriving at the gate right when they open at 6:00am. We hit the trail at around 6:10am and it was already in the upper 70's.
The trail starts off with a fairly flat first mile. The next mile follows a cobweb of trails up a steep gulley to the saddle of Turtlehead Peak. The climb was in the shade in the morning and was fairly reasonable temperature wise. There are a lot of ways up this section, but if you follow the paint it wasn't that difficult to follow. If all else fails, the correct direction is always up!
The views from the peak were fantastic and we enjoyed a nice breeze while chatting with a local about his favorite hikes in the area.
By the time that we were descending the same stretch was exposed to the sun and things started to heat up. The descent had some sections of loose rock and we had to be careful with where we stepped. We got back to the car just after 9:00am and it was already into the low 90's.
This was a great hike with killer views, however, I wouldn't start any later than 7:00am in the summer.
Looking forward to the higher elevation peaks in the next couple days!
