I highly recommend you start by 6-630am so that you’re down before the heat gets too bad. We started a little later and it was shady & cool on the way up, but we were in the direct sun on the way down. It was a steady uphill climb the entire 4 miles up, not too steep until the very end. Enjoy the views along the way, just stunning! Make sure you look for the Wally Waldron tree, just before the summit: at 1500 years old, it’s the oldest tree in the San Gabriels. I didn’t get a great pic because the sun was directly behind it. There are other cool trees at the top, too.
