Rocking two hours of sleep I met up with boys at 5am at our top secret Stater Bros parking lot meet up spot. Driver must have thought it was NASCAR Sunday as we made quick time to Chantry flats parking lot! We grabbed our gear, got our bearings and headed out for the day. We started down the Gabrielino National rec trail ( you read right down!) we kept going down the steep decline on the concrete service road assured this was the correct path. It was! Hitting the actual trail now was beautiful! We popped over to the falls ( more like a trickle ) still pretty though can only image what it looks like with water! Back to the trek to the top. This trail was relatively easy going and one of my favorites of the 6 we have done. The trail itself was very shaded easy walking and amazing nature views all around. Reaching the summit not one of my favs but still cool. Views are ok, but was really cool to see Mt Wilson observatory up there! There is a little museum, you can take a tour of the observatory if you want, and the true highlight of reaching MT Wilson peak… Cosmic Cafe!!! They have all sorts of grub I went for for a veggi sandwich, Gatorade, and pineapple popsicle mmmm tasty! We snapped the obligatory we made it photos. We were pretty bummed to find out both the peak sign and geo marker had been stolen. So we had to work with what we could. Heading back down we chose a different route which in the end makes for a big loop back to chantry flats. Again the trail down was nicely shade well travelled and easy going. All in all was another great day for hiking and great finish to the six pack of peaks challenge. Although this challenge is done, it has brought a group a friends together who plan to continue these adventures!
