We started around noon, enjoyed the usual Smith rock crowed, enjoyed losing the crowd even more as we started up Berma Road. Sweaters and coats were shed as we approved the summit trail within smith rock.
Continuing towards the butte we came across many signs of the coming spring, wildflowers and grasses, but were reminded of the recent snow fall by mild muddy and snowy patches.
Highlight of the hike; passing a father and his two sons, the oldest no more then 5 years old, the youngest, possibly 3. We let him know we were highly impressed by their endurance and perky attitudes as they approached the summit.
Our summit celebration was a snack and mini photo shoot before starting the 6 mile hike back to the car. With the sun shining we discussed finding our “new normal,” despite the shut downs and social distancing… which is probably the best place to discuss such a heavy subject.
Perhaps, amongst the chaos, finding peace in the storm, along this trail, is the new normal we choose.
