Summited San Antonio Mountain, “Mt. Baldy”, with the very capable assistance of one of my hiking buddies to start off the New Year. First day of the year. First time using ice-spikes. First distance hike at elevation (started at just over 6,000 ft – peak is 10.064 – over 12 miles total hike). First ever major summit.
Not certain the temp ever got above 40º, and winds were steady 25-30 mph out of the NE with regular gusts up to 40+ mph. Winds at the peak were gusting around 60 mph. Needless to say, we didn't stay up there long. Pics were hard to come by as the cold temp and insane windchill disabled our phones within seconds of exposure, even before we got to the snow line. When we stopped for a break or gear change, you could find me laying on the ground, huddled behind a tree or pile of rocks. The whole experience was exhilarating, breathtaking, and spectacular. Jan 1, 2019 will go down as one of the all time best New Year's Days. I am so grateful.
