We hiked Mount Mansfield on a hot, muggy day, with a 50% chance of rain. The early part of the walk was beautiful. There are a few streams that cross that the Sunset Ridge Trail that were picturesque, as well as tempting with their cool water pools! We stayed the course, and as we got higher the rains did come (though they felt good!), as did a thick dense fog. The trail was in great condition, obviously wet, but manageable. The fog added a certain mystery to the walk, as once we were above the tree line you knew there was a lot below, but could not see. We did walk with a dog, but at one point, probably 20 min from the summit, we didn't want to risk his safety. He probably could have made the rock scrambles, but we decided to take turns to the summit. The top was shrouded in fog, amazing. I could not see a thing. Quite a surreal experience. On our walk down the mountain we were lucky that the fog did lift, and lifted in patches. We were graced with views that made our jaws drop. We can't wait to get back to Mount Mansfield to explore it again, under different conditions.
