Wow! The last time I hiked Freel et al., the road was dicey but yesterday was beyond sketchy! I might add there was only one other Subaru in the area, the rest were high-clearance Jeeps, trucks, etc. The road is in need of major grating in several areas, like the very start! I was tempted to close my eyes and pray, but I was solo and the only one driving! After a long, slow drive, I made it to the trailhead. I had thought Castle and Basin would be my final Peaks for the Six Pack Challenge, but my backpacking friend texted me at 5:15 a.m. to say she was sick. So I changed backpacks and headed from Tahoe City to South Shore and Armstrong Pass. There's something about Freel and Job's Sister and Job's Peak that captures my interest. So barren. I feel like I'm on a moonscape, yet I have these phenomenal 360-degree views. The trail did not disappoint. I met a few TRT hikers and then on Job's Peak a ‘hot yoga' group from Minden who were doing just Job's. I also met four guys camping at Star Lake who were doing some crazy weaving in and out of trails (and bushwhacking) to do just Job's Peak and then avoid the scree climb back up Job's Sister. The scree route down Job's Sister was the most defined that I have experienced. Usually, there are several use trails but on this day it was one that called out loud and clear. The chipmunks on Freel were beyond obnoxious. People think it's cute to feed them and then create monsters that will in the end die from mold and other food poisoning issues when they try to bury and horde the handouts for winter. I enjoyed my time on the trail and was thrilled to end my Six Pack Peak Challenge here versus Castle which I do all the time.
