Cold, wet, windy, frozen. What else can i say? We decided to do this hike a week after the big storm and suffered for it. Expecting light showers in the early afternoon we unfortunately started the hike a bit late, around 8am. The trail was clear until approximately the spring and switchbacks and that's where the ice started… Crampons and/or trekking poles would have definitely helped but in my infinite wisdom I forgot both. We continued up the trail to Icehouse Saddle where the rain forced us to don our rain gear. Following the saddle, snow on the trail became plentiful and did not end until the summit. We took a small break to explore the mine shaft since none of us had been in it before and took some pics. The last several switchbacks before the final uphill were completely covered in snow. The trail was at some points unrecognizable and people had started to cut the switchbacks. The post at the Etiwanda Peak Junction appeared broken with only a foot or two sticking out of the snow. The final uphill was windy and foggy. About 5 minutes were spent at the summit because at that point we were cold and hangry. We took our pictures and left. The best way to describe my decent to the saddle would be to Youtube penguins sliding on ice. Thankfully i was able to borrow a trekking pole for some stability. I continued downhill in silent somnolence vowing never to hike on 2 hours of sleep again. It'll probably happen again for Mount Wilson though. =P
