Six to nine inches of snow covered the whole mountain! We arrived at the Red Box Picnic Area at 0640 and got one of the few spots remaining in the ice covered parking lot. My partner had spikes for his shoes but I did not. These would been helpful for the steep ascent to the summit. The hike up the first few miles was pretty easy at sunrise… packed snow for the trail and pushing through bushes that overhung it. Once you get up to the steep climb to the summit it was slippery but still decent. On the way down the sun was starting to melt the trail and with the increased traffic it became very slushy, slippery and wet. Still a fantastic hike and great views of the LA basin!
