We started the hike early in the morning to avoid the heat. The trail was an easy grade especially in the wooded area near the stream. Once the climb past the stream began, the trail became somewhat overgrown. After hiking a little over a mile up, we made it to the base of the final climb to the Grass Mountain summit. This last section of the hike was extremely steep with some areas of loose rock/dirt requiring extra care to navigate through. The abundance of tall grass also included tons of flies, which were a minor annoyance while making this final climb. But the views of the Santa Ynez Valley on this climb and at the summit were spectacular. We made it to the summit a little over an hour into the hike. The way down was pretty hard due to the steepness and loose rock, but going slowly definitely helped. We made it down to the parking lot at the right time as the temperature began to get pretty hot.
