Hit the trail while it was still dark in anticipation of the intense Sedona sun. Got out at 4:30am and had to use a flashlight for 20-25 minutes. The first mile and a half is pretty tame, 600-700 feet of elevation gain then the real climbing starts. The next mile and a half were pretty intense overall with some very steep areas. Then it flattens out for a short distance before you make another steep 1/2-2/3 of a mile climb to the top of Wilson Mtn, made it up to that point in about 1:50. Some pretty thick foliage in spots made for plenty of bugs (flies, horseflies, gnats, etc.) And the bonus of being the first one up that day is that I got to walk through the half a billion webs that had been strung out across the trail overnight ???? Once on top of the mountain it’s basically flat & you have the option of the north trail overlook (1.25-1.5 miles and worth every step) or the Sedona overlook (.5 mile & also very pretty.) Even starting early, coming back down puts you in some intense sun. There are shady spots early, but those will disappear by 10am. Great hike, round trip with both overlooks was 4:45 with plenty of breaks for doggie hydration.
