Did this on Saturday 08/27 with 2 others. Needless to say it requires good endurance, but is doable with breaks and enough supplies. Temp was low and it was extremely windy entire way up and so had to wear multiple layers. It wasn't letting my sweat dry – and so during bouldering & ash I felt pretty cold while taking breaks. We could stay hardly 10 mins on top because of the killing wind. It was so fast that we had to literally lay down to prevent ourselves from taking off. View from top was very special – you could see where the mountain blasted during eruptions. Well known facts: – First section through the woods is easy 2 miles gaining 1000ft. – Second section is bouldering through volcanic rocks and sand. 1.5 miles gaining over 2500ft. This is the longest part and feels never ending both ways up/down. – Third is climbing through volcanic ash – 1 mile and 1000ft. Hardest section, poles are must here. Took us 90 mins while going up. While coming down, it's much easier. Took me 4L of water, lots of electrolytes and food. Started 8:30AM, ended 8:30PM. We were the last ones to reach the top, didn't see anyone entire way back – it felt scary at times Overall great hike, top views – but one of those which i will probably never do again; gains not as much as the effort
