#6/6 and San Diego 6POP Completed!
We started at 6:30 and the temp was 41°. The Oak Grove Trail was clearly marked and easy to follow. It was a bit rocky and sandy and going up was not too big of a deal. However the heat came upon us quickly an we started shedding outer layers in the first mile. Lots of bugs in this area. We connected with the fire road at about mile 2. We decided to drop a frozen bottle of water here to retrieve on the way down. The heat became more intense and our ascent slower due to stopping in the shade when it was available. We made it to the summit where it was very windy and chilly. YAY! It felt sooo good! We enjoyed our lunch, views, and coolness for 45 minutes. We saw only two other single hikers as we started our descent. Once again, the heat came upon us hard. Now there was barely any shade and we just had to push through. We picked up our water bottles and they were warm. Bummer! We made it down Oak Grove Trail and realized it was much more slippery than we thought going up. A few slips and trips with one fall. But all was good. The heat became almost intolerable. We had cooling towels and plenty of water so we were ok. Now I know why they close the trail in the heat of the summer. Brutal.
