I started the Mount Umunum hike from the Bald Mountain trailhead at 7:30 AM on a late July Monday morning. I highly recommend an early start for this hike. There was only one other car in the parking lot, and I literally had the entire trail for the ascent as well as the summit to myself. I encountered about six hikers on the way down. The trail is wide, well maintained, very well marked, and never very steep. Unless you're interested in tracking your own mileage or something like that, you can leave your GPS at home. You won't get lost.
The hike is full of history lessons, including the remnants of an early 20th century cabin along with a very descriptive sign. At the summit you'll also find plenty of information about the radar tower foundation and it's history, as well as information about the area's plants and wildlife. If you're a history geek, this is a must-do.
