This is a beautiful trail with large stands of old growth, trees, fir, pine, oak and what appear to be cedar. The views at the top are spectacular. This is definitely a hike you don’t want to miss. A few points to keep in mind: 1. Bring and wear a bug net. The gnats are thick in the forested parts of the hike and you would be hard-pressed not to breathe some in if you didn’t have a bug net on. 2. Bring some deet to prevent insects from biting you. 3. Bring a good hat, hiking shoes, and hiking sticks. 4. The hiking day pass states that it is good from 8 AM to 6 PM. However, we had no trouble arriving before 8 AM and starting our hike. Trail head parking is plainly labeled. 5. The trail is in excellent condition, but this is a fairly strenuous hike with 2300 feet of elevation gain. More than half of the elevation gain is in the first 2 miles. We advise starting the hike early in the morning so that that the first part of the hike, that is so steep, and which does not have any shade, can be completed before the heat of the sun is directly upon you.
