I did a 12 mile out and back on May 9, 2021. The parking is at the trailhead and free, you do have to register for the hike and this is also free.

The trail is exactly what I read and expected from the Alltrails App. The first 4.5 miles was a moderate ascent, then you hit the 1.5 miles of switchbacks climbing to 8850 ft peak that earns you the right to hold the plague. On the way down, the first 1.5 miles is tricky, and some have created their own cuts, so be careful and go slow. Once you are out of the switchbacks, it's a quick descent back down to the trailhead. Before you hit the switchbacks, you will reach Icehouse Saddle and you have many options of trails to take. I suggest a quick rest and water up for the rest of your climb.

Overall, this is not a beginner hike, get a few shorter and less steep hikes under your belt and you'll be ready for this one. The weather and views were spectacular, I was above the clouds.

Enjoy your hiking.

    1. Great time of year for hiking, I just entered the challenge last week, so I’m knocking out the six peaks in six weeks. I wouldn’t want to get a late start on this one, the parking fills up by 6 am, I got to the parking on Sunday at 5:45, and it was almost full. I’ll be doing San Jacinto next Sunday. Enjoy yourself out there and take care of that knee.
