Great hike! We took the Fire Road from the Paso Picacho Campground to the Lookout on the way up and the Conejos Trail to the Azalea Spring Glen Trail back to the campground on the way back. My Fitbit logged about 9 miles.
It was warm; we started at about 9:30am, and arrived at the top of the peak about 1 1/2 hours later. It took us a while to find the wooden sign. Another guy was up there and he found it before we did, but know you'll need to hike up some more to find it.
Great views, but going up the blacktopped fire road wasn't my favorite. We preferred the trek down through the trees and brush. Take the Conejos trail to the left from the fire road and then when you finish that, take a right up the Azalea trail, which will get you back to the campground. If the brush bothers your legs, wear long pants. The red dirt in some places reminded me of Sedona, as did the rocks. It definitely was a better trail than the steep fire road.
We used the app to pay our $10 day use fee via credit card. We filled up our water bottles at the campground parking area, and we used the restrooms.
Bugs weren't too bad, even in the 90-degree heat. We loved the butterflies, jays, hawks, and squirrels.
This was our 2nd hike. Can't wait to do the rest later this year!
