Started @ Manker Flats @ 7am – snow was in trees and on ground @ trailhead temp about 40. It was cloudy down the mountain but sunny @ Trailhead. Fewer than 30 cars @ this time – especially on Memorial Day. Started off without spikes but there was snow all along the trail. I rather enjoyed hiking in the snow – is seemed like an easy ascent to the Ski Hut. There were two downed trees – one near the beginning that I could walk under – and another on the switchback near the ski hut that we had to hike up and over (when I came down – I didn't see this – detour must've been due to snow). Got to the ski hut @ 9:30am. Ski hut was closed – there were about 20 people there – for some this was their final destination – but I did see many on the upper portion of the trail. Had a bite to eat – left @ 10am. The next segment – had about 3-5 inches of snow on it – I continued up this section without spikes – again the snow seemed to make these section seem easier (30 minutes) On the last segment, a couple speedy gents were cruising by and had their spikes on – I asked if they thought they helped. They said yes – and highly recommended – especially on the descent if the trail got slushy. About 1/2 way up the 3rd section – the wind began to bellow – so I pulled over and put on the wind jacket and my spikes. The last incline prior to the summit was sunny and real windy with spindriff blowing about… a couple of gusts tore thru which made me double check my footing. Made it to the top @ 11:50 – there were maybe 20 people there…. It was quite windy and cold. Someone had placed two American Flags around the placard (see photo). Most people took their photos then descended down to the Log Pullout on the left just below the summit – for lunch. Surprisingly, there were several people that came up from Devils Backbone. I left the summit around 12:30 – kept my spikes on – which did help with the slush (the sun was still out) Stopped at the Ski Hut to take off spikes and continued down into the clouds which had drifted in just below the Ski Hut. The trail had a lot of run off on it along the way – Water was dripping from the trees along the trail. It was fun walking thru the mist – and seeing hikers that were coming up hill emerge from the fog. Made it back to Manker Flats @ 2:20pm Had a GREAT DAY met tons of wonderful people.
