While this hike was only 3 miles in length one way, it was 3 miles of a strenuous up hill and the downhill almost more difficult due to loose gravel and many uneven small and large rocks and small boulders. . . definitely a strenuous hike (at least from a 77 year old). The trail is very rocky with very uneven steps and strides, possibly as a result of this past winter's historic snow. For this hiker the descent was far more difficult. With that said, the views were worth the effort – although my legs from the descent might not agree as I write this. Our weather was perfect, even with 30+ winds as you approached the summit. As some writer described this trail, while relatively short in distance the Mt Elden trail is the most strenuous trail in the Flagstaff area other than Humphrey's.
