While midweek hikes at distant locales can make for later-than-normal bedtimes on a school night, the clear springtime skies and moderate afternoon temperatures made this particular late night worth it. Not only did we summit the peak before the summertime heat (and crowds) ascend upon the mountain, but we were also treated to an amazing sunset during our descent.
One fun fact I learned prior to this summit of Mission Peak: sealed within the base of the steel pole atop the peak—named the Mission Peaker—there is a hidden vault. Within this vault, there is a crystal with traditional cultural uses, an Ohlone charmstone replica, a bottle of 1990 zinfandel wine, and a time capsule with articles and photographs to educate and enlighten the denizens of 2090 (when the vault is slated to be opened next). Just something to think about next time any of you take a photo with (or on) the pole. ⛰???
