This is one of the coolest summits in the San Gabriel Mountains. Cucamonga Peak, at 8,862 feet, has amazing views. I started my hike at 7:45. I had to park down the road a little bit but whats an extra quarter mile right? I have never hiked this canyon before but have read about it and was excited to explore this new to me trail.
You do need a permit for this hike. Permits can be filled out at the trail head look of the brown metal box at the bathroom area. The trail starts of under a nice tree covered canopy above you. Signs point out the way to the saddle. The trail is easy to follow but at a few parts if your are not mindful you can get off trail easily. about a mile up the trail is where it begins to get challenging. The switchbacks lead you up to icehouse saddle.
The saddle is a nice spot to take a break and relax for the next part.
The hike up to the peak is tough but not brutal, brutal is over at Mount Baldy, the scenery and views are spectacular a long the way. About a mile from the saddle the switchbacks up to the top begin. These switchbacks are more challenging than the earlier ones but your legs should be warmed up by now and these should be no problem to get up. Just keep putting one foot in front of the other and take your time. Baby-steps if you are getting winded.
The top is very beautiful you are high above the city and feel like you are floating up in the sky. There are lots of areas to rest and enjoy your time taking photos and a quick nap if needed.
I liked this hike a lot. It has a good amount of challenging trail and easy trail. Just when the trail is getting too much it gives you a break you are at the saddle or at the top. The scenery and views are beautiful from top to bottom.
