Hiked on 4/18/21. 7.7 miles, 2,769 ft. elevation gain. Hike took 3:27. A quick, but tough hike, with switchbacks making up the entirety of the hike to the peak from the parking lot. Cool to see views gradually improving throughout, reaching well out into the Mojave, and opening up into the LA area and Mount Baldy near the end and on the summit. Cool memorial to the Boy Scouts and Robert Baden-Powell at the summit, along with the iconic American flag. The side of the mountain that the switchbacks climb does not get a lot of sunlight in the winter (and is mostly covered by trees), so snow will stay on this trail later in the season than most others. When I hiked in mid-April, microspikes were helpful for the last mile or so, where the switchbacks disappeared and I was essentially climbing straight up the mountain—not easy! Nothing funky in terms of the climb for this one – barring the end of the hike, which was steeper for me due to cutting straight up the mountain, the gradient is essentially exactly the same all the way up.
